YET THEY HAVE GUESSTIMATES OF HOW MUCH A NUCLEAR ENERGY PLANT COSTS TO BUILD. BUT IF THEIR COSTINGS ARE ANYTHING LIKE THE COST OF THE OLYMPICS THEN I GUESS THAT WILL SKY ROCKET.

Your idea for windmills on the Tap?

Paul Feiner:
”When Mayor (Michael) Bloomberg made the suggestion that New York City put wind turbines on bridges, I said, ‘Oh, this is an idea that would have some credibility.’ So I suggested that we take a look at putting wind turbines at the Tappan Zee Bridge. I wrote to the state and they seemed open-minded …The state in the near future will be finalizing decisions about what to do with the bridge. I think this would be a logical option to seriously study.”

Impact on the Valley?
“If they place a wind turbine on the bridge, not only would it generate power, which I think would be great, but it would send a message to motorists going across the bridge every single day of the importance to conserve energy and I think that’s probably as important as the conservation itself.”

To drill or not to drill? To siphon the strategic oil reserve or wait for a bleaker energy scene? Those are the questions the presidential hopefuls are tossing around as constituents debate the merit, cost, timeline, environmental impact and potential of such moves. In the meantime, oil and gas prices remain high, consumer confidence is low and businesses are sweating the budget season.

When it comes to energy, “going green” is the phrase these days. The responsible choice, but perhaps not the most practical or cost effective — not yet, anyway.

Still, action is needed. Energy costs in the region are set to rise again while reliability is always in question.

What does this mean for business in the Hudson Valley?

The Business Journal checked in with Paul Feiner, supervisor of the town of Greenburgh, N.Y, who has proposed a plan to place wind turbines on the Tappan Zee Bridge. New York state is studying whether to rebuild or repair the ailing bridge, as well as add a mass-transit component.

In an online interview, Feiner talked about his idea for the bridge, as well as some of the green initiatives his town has taken.
