How to Make Wind Turbines on Your Own

Over the last couple of years solar power generators have become more and more popular due to our hard economical times. Thousands of solar power systems are being installed domestically every day. Not only people lower their energy bills but Wind Turbines are also safe for the environment. Read on if you’re interested in making your own Wind Turbines that can drastically reduce your energy bills month after month.

Normally a ready made solar panel costs up to a few thousands and I’m sure not everyone wants to make such an investment. This is the reason why more and more people are deciding to build their own Wind Turbines right in their own backyard. All the parts that you need to build a solar system don’t cost you more than $200 dollars depending on where you buy the parts from. (We’ve researched the Internet for a while and noticed that the solar cells for example are the cheapest to buy online — as low as $1 per cell.)

In fact the photovoltaic cell is the most important part of the system. Each panel contains a set of solar cells that are wired up with copper in series. Even a 200 watt solar panel produces enough energy to either charge a battery for further use or to be converted directly into AC voltage for domestic use.

If you decide to start building you own Wind Turbines you need to have all the required parts such as photovoltaic cells, copper wire, boards, glass and all the other required tools including a soldering iron that heats up fast. You need be careful as the markets are full of non-quality solar cells, the cheapest and most effective ones can be found online. Basically you won’t be spending more than one hundred and fifty to two hundred dollars altogether. Imagine that a solar panel normally costs around $3000. (Last time I’ve checked at my local power system supplier.)

Depending on the size of your house and how much energy you need, you might want to make more than one solar panel. A charge controller will be required in order to regulate the amount of energy that each panel sends into the charging batteries. For those that don’t know the batterie’s life is being shortened when you over charge them and that’s why a charge controller is a ‘must have’.

No matter how many Wind Turbines you need to make, building them on your own will drastically reduce the costs comparing to what you would pay for a few ready-made ones. We’re now building our fifth panel and so far we haven’t spent more than nine hundred dollars altogether. And if you’re a bit lucky you might be able to get some of the materials at a local garage sale. Even if it’s hard to believe you can save more than 80% on your energy bills each year by making your own Wind Turbines.

I’m planning on installing both solar panels and wind turbines at my house over the next few years hoping to be more energy efficient. But, being the high cost of it I’m planning on doing it gradually as the money comes available to me. I use on average over a 12 month period about 800 kWh of electricity a month. I also live in Michigan where the average amount of sun is only about 3.5 hours a day year long and that’s my reasoning for using both solar and wind. A grid tie inverter seems like it would be the most beneficial because it would eliminate the use of battery’s and I think it would maximize the efficiency of the system over its life time. I’m an industrial electrician so I think I can figure out most of the installation my self. Can anyone give me some advice on what would be a good starting off point because this is all new to me? I don’t have a problem working hard or doing more work to save some money as long as it wouldn’t effect the efficiency of the project.

-Well right now i have free light in my room, not alot. but it is still enough to see. i have it currently hooked up to 4 AA batteries that charge up easily over a period of 5 hours with a decent amount of wind. They charge up to about 5.5 volts. They can run the light for maybe an hour strait WITH the help of the turbine (the batteries arent all that great)

-I am probably going to just buy a couple rechargable 9 volt batteries and hook them up in parrallel. that way my light would run for a good long time. probably all night. then the turbine could charge up during the day..

-This baby puts out an average of 2 to 4 watts. That is very good for this things size. I have seen it reach a max of 7 or 8 watts. thats really good for my little turbine that cost me no money what so ever.

I found this great digital whiteboard somebody designed, for illustration purposes which uses the mini IR Camera in every WiiMote and some software, plus you need to build a small IR pointer from an old pen. I built mine simply by wiring up an IR LED with resistor (about 80ohms), a small switch, and a 2xAA battery pack all stuffed into an old pen.
All credit goes to Johnny Chung Lee of Carnegie Mellon HCI institute for this system. I just built an IR pointer and used his software and set up the hardware.
