The Best Residential Wind Turbine For Your House

Subscribe to Home Wind Turbine

Hi! A small wind turbine for your house is a great investment and if you do it right you will laugh at your energy bill...

How to build a wind turbine?

That is a very large subject, and the answer won't fit in here. So you are going to have to spend some time on some research in the library and on the internet. Just run an internet search on "how to build a wind turbine," and you will get a large number of information sources.

Most amateur wind turbine projects are failures, and it takes a really clean design and industrial scale manufacturing facilities to build a successful one. If you want one for your own residential or commercial power system project, you will be well advised to buy a commercially manufactured one. Again, you can find all the products you want for sale on the internet.

There are two main types of wind turbines that amateurs have attempted to build. Some of these people had very sophisticated mechanical knowledge and skills, but most of them didn't work, or didn't hold up very well. There are vertical axis and horizontal axis turbines.

A vertical turbine has the advantage that it does not need to swivel to face into the wind. There are a number of popular designs for them made out of oil drums and other available materials.

A horizontal turbine is like those used in commercial wind farms. A number of small models are available for home use. It has to swivel into the wind, which means you need a swivel mechanism for transmitting the electric current from the swivel part to the stationary part. This is a complex, high maintenance assembly.

You can also find plans and kits for horizontal turbines, but again, the commercially made ones are the practical answer.

Sorry to be so pessimistic, but I have seen too many smart people try to build wind turbines and end up doing something else.
