Wind Power Greed NY

by Timlynn Babitsky
Suspicious shenanigans by wind developers in upstate New York has prompted the Stateâ??s Attorney General to develop a code of conduct for wind energy companies doing business in The Empire State. There is no question that wind power in New York State has the potential to make positive changes for many who live there, but the ends should never justify the means. And, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, absolutely agrees.

In an early September post on my website â?? Wind Power Greed - I painted an ugly picture of wind energy lust. Some wind farm developers in upstate New York were bribing local officials to get permission to build wind towers, colluding among developers to avoid competitive wind option leases, and shutting down discussion in local town meetings looking for the quickest way possible to acquire enough land to make their wind farms a reality.

Thanks to the concerted efforts of a number of good folks and solid investigation by the NY Attorney General, New York State now has a Wind Power Code of Ethics that spells out quite clearly what must, and must not occur as developers and towns bring wind energy to the state.

Although subscription to the code is not mandatory, the code itself and the Task Force created to monitor wind development in the state, will ensure that towns and wind developers both keep an eye on how they do business.

In brief, the Code covers conflicts of interest by banning wind companies from:

  • offering municipal officers bribes, gifts, compensation for services, contingent compensation, honoraria, or payment of legal fees and
  • soliciting from municipal officers restrictions on easements/leases, or confidential information.

The Code further spells out specific public disclosure publication requirements covering any and all financial interests of municipal officers in the project/company and all easements and leases.

The wind development company must provide specific education and training to its own employees and local municipal officers on how they need to conduct business within the Code of Ethics.

  1. David K Said,

Can ones entire home and car be powered by solar power? Is it possible?
    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/images06/nav-bar-main.jpg

    TRUTH vs OIL/COAL GREED

Oil and Coal having been polluting and killing our earth/humans for DECADES. This beautiful tract home installed a solar system that will pay for itself in 7 YEARS and leave them with a monthly electric gill of $0.00 FOR every year after.
If one tract home can do it ALL CAN.
Temperature makes no difference. In Germany where temperatures are at a higher average than the US 30% of their energy is solar/wind/oil alternative and is EXPANDING each year.
If you are a money sucking lover of Oil and Coal DO NOT GO TO THIS PBS LINK BECAUSE YOU WILL THROW UP AT THE IDEA OF ALL YOUR STOCK GOING DOWN THE DRAIN!!!.
I forgot to relate a Toyota RAV 4 which has zero oil and gas usage(some fluids-brake fluid, power steering fluid, windshield wiper fluid)
    Its obviously practical.
If you don't reference the PBS site
you can not answer the question correctly.
    I apologize

A combination of solar powerbanks and hot water cells supplemented with a wind generator. You can even sell your extra power to the power company. I cook with gas and heat with wood.

Possible, but until your assertion, every project I've heard of that's tried it is in the half a million dollar or higher range. They payback period on that, not counting maintenance, is not realistic.

    We'll see what PBS did…

    Oookay.
    1) their estimated utility and gasoline bills are $500 per month, which is probably higher than average. Mine is half that, for example.

    2) They stayed hooked up to the grid. Other projects have to spend way more on batteries, inverters, converters and panels to generate not only the necessary power on less sunny days, but also to cover them through winter without access to the grid. One project used excess solar in the summer to extract hydrogen from water for use in generating electricity in the winter - which meant a whole second power generating scheme for the home.

A local organic gardener I do business with put some solar capacity at their home this year. They do not expect it to 'pay back' in a reasonable period of time, but did it because they wanted to consume less power anyway.

I knew some people in colorado that only had solar power. They didn't even have electric hooked up. If it was cloudy for long periods he said they would have to conserve as much as possible during those spans.

Help this single mom with 80 acres in the Tn mountains I'll show them how too! I'd be a proud American if I could do this! Your link goes no where though check it out.

yes it is very possible, the only thing holding people back from that right now is that solar energy pannels arnt all that efficiant. If they could bring efficiancy up by about 5-10% you could power your house, car and even have energy left to sell back to the grid! Their are even cars that run on compressed air. I saw it on future cars on the discovery channel. If everyone used that car not only would their be no emmitions but it would acctually help to reverse the effects of the green house. how you ask? well using the compressed air to run the car the air that comes out of it is cool, therefor if everyone on the planet used this car it would acctually cool the planet. Thier trying to get a air compressor in the car making it to where you would never have to stop to fill your car with air! you could drive and drive and drive.

Absolutely it is possible. I'm an electric car owner, and I am looking at getting a small solar panel (or windmill) to charge my car.
    *
It's hard to argue with driving around for FREE.
    *
Solar panels aren't cheap, but I can get one suitable for my car for a thousand or two. How long can you drive around on gasoline for a couple thousand dollars? I can drive on my solar panel for a couple of decades.
    *
Here's a picture of my electric car - it's a pretty old one, but it still works. It even does freeway speeds. It still has all the original motor parts. (EVs are very reliable.) :
