We are working on an inexpensive yet efficient wind turbine generator for use by low-income communities all around the world. Our goal is to build the best turbine using readily available materials, and an easy-to-build design. This is an ever-evolving project which started with a typical horizontal propeller. However we decided that the vertical airfoil design would work better for us in this instance. If you have any comments or suggestions, please comment.

This is the first time I tested my new blades for my wind turbine. They are 5′ 1″ long on a 14″ diameter hub. The rotor is 10.5′ in diameter; the blades are a cedar-epoxy composite; the hub is marine plywood/epoxy. The tower is 36′ high. The blades start spinning from 0 rpm to somewhere near 500 rpm. Although they appear in the video to slow down due to the frame rate, they become invisible to the naked eye. You can read the whole project at http://www.mindchallenger.com/wind

This wind turbine is based on the Lenz II design which measures 4 ft tall X 3 ft in diameter.

It has a 12 magnet, dual rotor alternater with 9 coils. Each coil is 70 turns.
The wing construction is a steel frame made of laser cut ribs with tubular spars and a trailing edge. The ribs fit into notches on the spars and was welded together. The skin is .030″ aluminum that has been fastened with rivets.
The rotating embly spins on a fixed shaft. Bearings and wing spokes are bolted to the center tri-star carrier plates. The wings can be quickly removed and swapped.
Currently this turbine feeds a small bank of 2 GC-110 wet cell batteries wired in series for a 12V system. AC output is provided by a 1500W inverter.
